The DRS Class 68’s on the New Measurement Train this week have provided a lot of interest. With the help of Nick Campbell here is a snapshot of their 16 hour trip around the South West. Starting at Old Oak Common HST depot just outside London Paddington station at 5.30am they passed Dawlish at 8.35am and went on to Penzance. Returning from there to Teignmouth for a few minutes in the station whilst a Cross Country Express passed they set off over the newly laid crossover to test it’s integrity and onward to Paignton. After a short break they then returned through Dawlish and on to Bristol Temple Meads station before a reversal back to Taunton. From there another reversal to take them back to Paddington via Westbury arriving at 9.11 pm 25 minutes early. The Class 68’s are powered by a Caterpillar 16 cylinder 3800BHP engine geared to have a maximum speed of 100mph.
