Devon County Council had been required by an act of Parliament to ensure that a fully open section of the Shaldon Bridge could be available if and when required for boats to obtain access (at a cost) to the higher parts of the River Teign. It has not been fully open since 2002 when it was tested. More recently, October 2016, on trial it failed to open fully and has required much maintenance to the winding gear enable it to pass today’s trial. Pictures kindly supplied by Nick Campbell.

It was safely returned to its normal road position just after lunch no doubt much to the relief of the travelling public who had faced a 16 mile detour whilst the road was closed.
