Today gave us the first good look at one of the new trains that will replace the HST’s that have provided the express services for over 40 years. This version of the train is a 5 coach unit capable of being powered by a pantograph to overhead electric wires or by running on diesel engines where the route hasn’t been electrified. Today ‘s train was two units coupled together 800004 which is named Sir Daniel Gooch one end and Isambard Kingdom Brunel at the other. The rear unit was 800003 named Queen Elizabeth11 one end and Queen Victoria the other.

The video is a compilation of my own video, recordings from both webcams and finishes with Nick Campbell’s taken at the end of Teignmouth sea wall. Unfortunately the train was running 5 mins early and its progress was hampered by the local DMU stopping service but at least we got a better view of it! It is due to stop in Dawlish Warren loop at 3.58pm when it returns from Penzance today so is unlikely to be running at full line speed here.
