A tale of two specials.  Today two special trains were booked to pass along the Dawlish Sea wall

One was steam hauled and the other by double headed diesel power.

LMS 46100 Royal Scot’s Dartmouth Explorer tour from Woking to Kingswear went completely to plan this morning. The WCR diesel locomotive 47237 on the rear of the train is there for assurance but will take over the return to Woking at Northern Fitzwarren whilst Royal Scot makes it’s own way back to Southall.

Unfortunately the Mazey day Cornishman tour from Worcester to Penzance was beset with mechanical problems from the start.

Leaving Worcester at 6.53 some 73 minutes late with DRS Class 37’s 37059  heading the train, 37069 had failed so the tour commenced with only the one locomotive. it eventually arrived at Bristol 143 minutes late where a replacement locomotive for 37069 took over at the head of the train. This was Freightliner 66525 after which the tour safely arrived in Penzance at 3.28pm after a journey down of just over eight and a half hours.
