The sole loco hauled passenger service in Devon and Cornwall apart from the occasional special long distance tours is the May to September summer Saturday service from Plymouth to Exeter and the return to Penzance. Next Saturday 9th September will be the final one for the year and rumour has it that in future years the service will be operated by the normal railcars that are used on the local services.. The locomotive used is the one that had been powering the Friday Night Riviera sleeper train from Paddington to Penzance and using the day coaches from the sleeper set. This week the locomotive instead of the usual GWR loco had been hired in from Direct Rail Services and was number 57310 named “Pride of Cumbria” where DRS are based. Previously it was a member of the Virgin fleet of Thunderbirds primarily used as rescue engines for Pendolino electric train and Voyager breakdowns. and named “Kyrano”, who was one of the puppets in the supermarionation TV series of the mid 1960’s. The special Dellner coupling needed for the rescue services is still installed on this loco which doesn’t do anything for its aesthetic appearance!
Nick Campbell recorded the station stop at Teignmouth on the “up” service to Exeter St. Davids.
