Late on Tuesday evening there were two Network Rail works trains. The earlier one was a ballast train from Westbury to Exeter St Thomas via Plymouth, presumably dropping ballast off in various places en route. To allow the passage of a local train and a Cross Country Voyager the train was sent “wrong line” between Dawlish Warren and just beyond Teignmouth station. Nick videoed it as it passed through the “up” platform of Teignmouth station. It consisted of 10 autoballaster wagons and was powered by Freightliner 66511. The second train was a 5 coach push and pull test train powered by Colas 37254 which for a change had the locomotive leading as it made its way to Truro before returning to Plymouth for stabling around 5am.
The testing work is in operation and can be detected by the powerful lights further along the train shining down on the track. The driving trailer car on the rear seems to have gained a few more attachments.
