Today Inspection saloon Caroline was in use with a Bristol Temple Meads to Penzance and back outing powered by DRS 37405. The locomotive ran round the coach at Penzance which was unfortunate for photographers but obviously a much better view for the occupants doing their job!
For the return I set my camcorder up on the wall and took the photographs just where the trio of walkers were when it passed in the morning.
Caroline has a very interesting history from being the Southern Region General Managers saloon to Royal Train use after Prince Charles & Diana’s wedding andconveying Pope John Paul II to Victoria from Gatwick airport. It was also the first standard gauge passenger service to enter the Channel Tunnel.
The video follows the train as it speeds through Teignmouth station and then firstly the DawlishBeach Blenheim camera then the San Remo camera and finally my own video. I kept my video running to show how near it was to the 1C86 Paddington to Penzance “Cornishman” HST service blotting out the view of Caroline!
