The weekend of 12th and 13th of October 2019 is Dementia charity weekend in Dawlish.
On the 12th October Home Instead Senior Care are holding a Dawlish Dementia Adventure Open Day at the Manor House in Dawlish and on the 13th, Dawlish Beach Cams will be walking from Dawlish to Dawlish Warren for Alzheimer’s South West and both events will broadcast it LIVE on Facebook.
Back in June The Blenheim kindly donated their railway pictures for a charity auction that had been on the walls of the B&B for decades. We raised a total of £406.50 for Alzheimer’s South West and since then I have wanted to organise a charity walk from Dawlish to Dawlish Warren and Live Stream it on Facebook.
My Auntie Kate suffered from this horrendous disease and passed away peacefully in Palm Court nursing home in the early hours of 4th August. It’s been important for me that my Uncle Dick joins us on this walk (both pictured above) so have wanted to wait until we were both available.
After being invited to the Dawlish Dementia Adventure Open Day by the Mayor on the 12th, I thought the 13th would be a perfect day for our charity walk as it would have also have been my Dads’ birthday.
Dawlish Dementia ‘Adventure’ Open Day
This event is open to all – local businesses, residents, and young people are welcome to attend. This is a chance to challenge your perceptions of dementia, to learn about how the arts and music can provide hugely positive experiences and therapy for people with dementia, and to participate in our workshops.
Four years ago Dawlish had a visit and presentation from the founder of the Purple Angel Dementia Awareness Campaign, Norman McNamara, several local shops and businesses achieved the Purple Angel Logo award. This Dementia ‘Adventure’ event is the result of careful planning by Mayor of Dawlish, Cllr Alison Foden, and Daniel Goode, registered manager at Home Instead Senior Care.
Norman will be our keynote speaker opening the Dawlish Dementia ‘Adventure’ open day, and there will be free workshops – meaningful music from music and health group Musica; Tempo Tots – a multigenerational music and rhyme session from local group Roots; and community dementia-awareness training too.
Amongst the information stands there will be Horsemanship for Health, the national Join Dementia Research campaign, the Friends of Dawlish Hospital, Assist Teignbridge, and staff from local Sefton Hall, and Home Instead Senior Care. Refreshments will be available on the day, with the kind assistance of Assist Teignbridge.
All are very welcome to attend this Dawlish Dementia ‘Adventure’ open day, which will take place from 10 am to 2 pm at the Manor House on Old Town Street, Dawlish. Any queries or for further information please contact Cllr Alison Foden by email: alison.foden@dawlish.gov.uk.
Beach Cams Live Sea Wall Walk for Alzheimer’s
This event is also open to all. We will meet at the viaduct in Dawlish at 1pm and walk to Dawlish Warren along Brunel’s iconic sea wall.
The event will be Live Streamed on Facebook for those that can’t join us in person.
All we ask is that you kindly donate to Alzheimer’s South West. We will have charity collection pots on the day and will provide a link to donate online.
