From the Mayor of Dawlish, Cllr Val Mawhood

“I know that you will enjoy the photographs of our beautiful waterfowl, month by month as this year goes by.  Rather like humans they ‘dress to impress’ in early Spring, choose a partner and set about making a home, or nest!  Then eggs arrive, sometimes a lovely ‘duck egg blue’. The parents settle down to incubate them until at last they hatch into pretty little ducklings, goslings or especially the much- admired cygnets. Then they bask in the admiration of us all.

The weeks and months that follow mean a hectic round of parenting until the end of the year when peace once again reigns!

Throughout the year, come rain or shine, our dedicated Waterfowl and Maintenance Wardens Don and Steve look after the well-being of all the waterfowl with utmost care and pride. The £4  from each of these calendars will go towards the cost of feeding, cleaning, and veterinary care, for all the species that can be seen enjoying the tranquil space within the waterfowl enclosure or on the Brook.”

Adult Black Swan

This is the male of the pair that arrived in April 2021 after the devastating avian full that claimed the lives of 11 black swans and cygnets. Funding from the previous Waterfowl Pin Badge helped raise the funds for these birds.

One Day Old Gosling

These young geese are so cute when they’re young.

These ducks can be seen in our aviary.

When the cygnets are just a week or two old, they often like to hitch a ride with their parents. They grow so fast though that they can’t do this once they reach about one month old.
